Some of my fondest memories as a teenager centre around evening walks with my dad. Clearly, I would need a nudge to get moving, but those evening strolls by the beach became the backdrop for some of our most meaningful conversations. There’s something about walking side by side, much like driving, that makes it easier to tackle tough topics; you're not facing each other directly, allowing for a certain comfort in vulnerability. Not every discussion was heavy, though. We shared a lot of laughter, too.
This week's blog is all about the incredible benefits of getting outside after dinner. With longer evenings and warmer days upon us in the UK, it's the perfect opportunity to step out for a walk. This simple act is not just about boosting your step count; it’s a fantastic way to unwind, enjoy nature, and support better digestion and sleep.

The Benefits of Post-Dinner Walks
Going for a walk after dinner offers a myriad of health benefits that can enhance your overall well-being. Here are some compelling reasons to lace up your shoes or pop on your Birkenstocks and head outdoors:
Improved Digestion: A leisurely walk can help stimulate your digestive system, making it easier for your body to process the food you've eaten.
Better Sleep: Engaging in light physical activity can help regulate your sleep cycle, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Stress Relief: Spending time outdoors, especially in natural settings, can significantly reduce stress levels and improve your overall mood.
Increased Creativity: A change of scenery can boost your creativity and help clear your mind, making it a great time for brainstorming or problem-solving.
Quality Family Time: Evening walks can be a wonderful way to connect with family or friends. If you can get them out, it is a perfect way to connect with your teen and get them away from their screens.
You will be less likely to snack: Cleaning up and closing up the kitchen is one of the most fail-proof and efficient ways I can think to stop snacking. You are adjusting your environment and calming your circadian rhythm, preparing to rest.
How to Make the Most of Your Evening Walks
To truly reap the benefits of your post-dinner stroll, consider these tips:
Leave Your Devices Behind: This is my number 1 top tip. Disconnect from technology and the world and give yourself some winding-down time.
Incorporate Mindfulness: Pay attention to your breathing, the sounds of nature, and the feeling of your feet on the ground to enhance relaxation. Getting you're feet onto the earth, particularly at the end of the day can be incredibly healing. (Walking barefoot on grass allows the body to absorb negative ions from the Earth, which can neutralise the positive ions accumulated from electronic devices we look at every day. It’s a natural way to restore the body’s electromagnetic balance and promote overall well-being and healing. This alone is one key reason for me to get my feet on the grass. My screen time is off the charts.
Invite a friend: Walking with a friend or family member can make the experience more enjoyable and motivate you to stick with it.
Taking a walk outside after dinner is a simple yet powerful health hack that can improve your digestion, enhance your sleep, and provide a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If you've been with people all day, it’s a fantastic way to unwind and take some time for yourself. Likewise, it's just as lovely to reconnect with a 15-minute stroll with your partner, child or friend. As the days grow longer and warmer, make it a habit to step outside in the evenings.
Your body, mind, and sleep will thank you for it.
