Weight loss medication and midlife women: My honest take as a Personal Trainer

Weight loss medication is having a moment, and it’s only going to become more accessible and affordable. As a personal trainer who specialises in supporting midlife women, I’m now being asked about it almost weekly. Clients, friends, even family want to know: What do you think?
Here’s my honest opinion.
Midlife Weight Loss Isn’t a Level Playing Field
I’m truly happy about anything that makes health more accessible, especially for midlife women. By the time we reach our 40s, the rules change.
Weight loss is simply not the same for women as it is for men. They’ve a consistent supply of testosterone, which helps them build muscle and stay lean. Meanwhile, our hormones start working against us.
From an evolutionary perspective, it made sense. Once we stopped reproducing, the body began to slow down. We weren’t even designed to live long enough to reach menopause.
But here we are, running households, businesses, and entire lives, long past 40. We’re expected to thrive in a high-speed iPhone 16 world, while our stress response system still runs like it’s stuck on iPhone 1.
Should You Take Weight Loss Medication?
If there’s something that can support your long-term health, I’m for it. Full stop.
However, I do believe it needs to be accompanied by lifestyle changes that nourish and strengthen your body.
I recently read a quote that said:
“Self-care is a form of self-respect.”
And it’s true. Whether it’s through strength training, balanced meals, sleep, meditation, journaling, or GLP-1 medication, taking care of your body is an act of respect. It’s about choosing to stay in a healthy weight range because you value your life.
Why would anyone shame that?
Here’s the Caveat: Medication Isn’t the Whole Answer
As an online personal trainer, my job is to remind you of this: You still need to lift weights. You still need to eat whole foods. You still need to sleep.
Weight loss medication is a tool, but it isn’t the toolkit.
If you're on it, you'll eventually want to come off the higher doses. The key to making that work is this combination:
Adequate muscle to support your metabolic and bone health
A diverse, fibre-rich diet to support your gut microbiome
A routine that supports your nervous system, not just your waistline
That’s the kind of sustainable health strategy I stand behind.
I'm Here to Support, Not Judge
Here’s what I don’t stand behind: fear tactics.
I’ve heard some truly awful stories from women recently, nutritionists using scare-mongering to put women off weight loss medication.
It’s disheartening. And more than that, it’s dangerous.
Women aren’t looking for fear. They’re looking for clear, balanced advice that helps them feel safe, informed, and in control of their choices.
Final Thoughts
Whether you're quietly considering weight loss medication, are already on it but want to maximise its benefits, or you want an exit strategy, it can feel like a lot to untangle, but the good news is, there are options. That’s precisely why I wanted to create The Quiet Reset. It’s a space to feel supported in your choices, no judgment, no overwhelm, just clear, honest advice to help you achieve the best outcome, whatever you choose.
